Area Commander
Chattanooga, Tennessee |
Major Algerome Newsome was born and raised in New Orleans, LA. Having grandfathers who were ministers of two different Baptist churches in New Orleans, he was constantly moved between churches in order to keep family peace. While other kids played outside he was normally kept in Bible study groups and personal Bible tutoring. Having accepted Jesus into his heart at the age of nine, he has never moved far from the early foundation of the knowledge of Christ. At the age of thirteen he found his way to the neighborhood Salvation Army by invitation of then Captains Steve and Louise Smith; who invited him to VBS at the Corps. He later became involved in Youth programs as a Boy Scout.
He later graduated from Alcee Fortier High School. He attended Southern University of New Orleans then joined the Marine Corps as a Communication Specialist.
Major Teresa Newsome was born in Eustis, Florida to the parents of orange grove share croppers. When she was only two years old her parents, desiring to create a more stable home environment moved the family to Toccoa, Georgia. Major Peacock came and invited her at the age of 6 to the Sunbeam program at the Corps. At a young age she began to take on leadership roles in the Corps. Teresa is also a product of meager beginning, which helped her develop a compassionate heart for those who struggle under poverty’s grip.
Teresa gave her heart to Jesus at the age of 12. She felt the call to Officership at the age of 13 at the division’s Youth Councils. Once it was settled in her heart the path was clear and everything in her teenage life was building to only one conclusion, and that was to serve God as a Salvation Army Officer. She graduated from Stephens County High School and then continued her education at Toccoa Falls Bible College. She was the first in her family to graduate high school and to go to college.
The Newsome’s married on January 16th, 1988, and are the parents of 3 beautiful children; Algerome II, Chelsea and Brandyn.
Our new Area Commanders Majors Algerome and Teresa Newsome served at the Chattanooga Citadel Corps for six months in 1999, and were then called to serve in Atlanta to lead the Peachcrest Corps Community Center & Boys and Girls Club. Through the favor of the Lord and their amazing leadership, the Newsome’s were able to minster to two hundred young people entering the center daily.
The Newsome’s ministry grew in 2001, when they were appointed as Divisional Youth Leaders of the Kentucky-Tennessee Division. The Salvation Army was pleased with their efforts and decided to stretch them to capacity. Major Teresa Newsome was appointed to carry on the work the two of them had been responsible for. She alone continued to carry out all the duties and responsibilities of the youth and camping program of the division, while Major Algerome Newsome was appointed as the Divisional Secretary.
God and The Salvation Army once again smiled on the Newsome’s and appointed them to Chattanooga, TN, where the two of them look forward to continuing and advancing the Ministry of The Salvation Army. Their personal focus and mission has been by the grace of God to leave every place and person better than the way they found them.
