Salvation Army Continues Relief Efforts to Hurricane Evacuees by Offering Shopping Privileges at the Local Family Store
Chattanooga, TN – As Disaster Preparedness Month begins, The Salvation Army continues its local relief efforts by serving food and beverages, supplying clothing and providing shelter to Hurricane Gustav evacuees. Today at 10:00 AM, the Salvation Army is expecting shuttles to begin arriving again at its East Ridge Family Store for evacuees to shop for needed clothing.
"Many of the shelter guests that were bussed here have lost luggage or do not have enough clothing, so we have opened up our Family Store in East Ridge to serve these guests. This is how The Salvation Army continues to 'Do the Most Good' with our donor's time, money and resources," states Major Jim Lawrence, Area Commander of The Salvation Army.
Salvation Army Director of Community Relations & Advancement Kimberly George says a great need the public can help the Army meet is through the donation of clothing. "We've restocked our East Ridge Family Store, but we really need more summer clothing items and undergarments in a variety of sizes, from child to adult." These items can be dropped off at any of the three Salvation Army Family Stores: Ringgold at Belvoir Roads in East Ridge, our new store on Battlefield Parkway across from Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School and in Cleveland at the intersection of Keith and 17th Streets.
Kimberly George also said The Army is looking to the community for a helping hand.
"Another special need we're asking the public to consider is the donation of water so we can keep the evacuees and relief workers hydrated especially in the hot summer weather we're having now." Mrs. George said donations of cases of water may be dropped off at The Salvation Army's 800 McCallie Avenue location.
The Salvation Army will be preparing lunch this morning at its Hurricane shelter located at 1019 North Moore Road. The Salvation Army is also grateful for the assistance of the Chef of the Acropolis for preparing today's main course.
The mission of The Salvation Army's mobile canteen is to provide welcome snacks and hydrating drinks to both evacuees and relief workers. In the first two days of operation, Salvation Army volunteers provided more than 1,100 cold drinks and nearly 1,500 snacks. The canteen and a team of local volunteers are on stand-by to join relief efforts on the Gulf Coast if called upon.
The Salvation Army has been serving since Saturday, August 31, in conjunction with Hamilton County Emergency Management, the Hamilton County Health Department, and the American Red Cross.
