Salvation Army Relief Efforts Boosted by Local Volunteers
Chattanooga, TN – The Chattanooga Salvation Army's continuing emergency relief efforts on behalf of Hurricane Gustav evacuees are made possible in large part by the selfless work of local volunteers. In the first three days of operating the Salvation Army mobile canteen and emergency shelter, 24 Salvation Army volunteers have provided over 100 hours of their time.
Chattanooga Area Commander Major Jim Lawrence says, "Our volunteers gave up holiday and personal time to rush in to serve the needy evacuees who began streaming into our area Saturday afternoon. We are deeply indebted to them for their sacrifices on behalf of others. This is the spirit that is the backbone of the Salvation Army."
Trained Salvation Army Disaster Relief Team volunteers are serving evacuees and emergency workers from the Salvation Army's mobile canteen stationed at the local Red Cross shelter. The Salvation Army also opened its North Moore Road location in Brainerd to serve as a second shelter with space available for 100 beds. Evacuees have stayed in the Salvation Army shelter for the past two nights.
The Salvation Army Family Store on Ringgold Road in East Ridge has given more than 1,300 articles of clothing to needy evacuees, so the Salvation Army is asking for the donation of clothing, especially undergarments and summer wear. Clothing may be taken to any Salvation Army Family Store. These are located at the intersection of Ringgold and Belvoir Roads in East Ridge, on Battlefield Parkway across from Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School, and in Cleveland at Keith and 17th Streets. Hours of operation are 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Saturday.
The Salvation Army is also asking for monetary donations and cases of water to help in its relief efforts. These may be dropped by the Salvation Army's 800 McCallie Avenue location near downtown Chattanooga.
