Chattanooga Salvation Army Wades Into Disaster Clean-Up

Chattanooga, TN – With floodwaters falling Wednesday, the Chattanooga Salvation Army continued serving evacuees and disaster relief workers hot meals and snacks from three Mobile Kitchen units and prepared to distribute more clean-up kits. Nearly 100 East Ridge and North Georgia residents who found safety in the Red Cross Shelter at the Brainerd Recreation Center are eager to go home.

In relief efforts that began last Thursday, the Chattanooga Salvation Army reports it has served more than 450 meals through Tuesday night to evacuees in shelters, stranded residents of East Ridge and North Georgia in their homes, as well as to disaster relief workers throughout the affected area. Among those being served hot meals are fifty residents of an East Ridge Retirement Center who were placed in two local motels.

The Chattanooga Area Command on Tuesday requested stand-by Mobile Kitchen units from Lebanon and Winchester, Tennessee be sent as floodwaters continued to rise and the number of evacuees was growing. Now, as the waters recede, feeding efforts continue, and the distribution of clean-up kits will increase as evacuees prepare to return to their homes. A shipment of 300 clean-up kits will be delivered to the Salvation Army Community Center at 1019 North Moore Road Thursday morning at 7:00 AM.

The local Salvation Army is again providing clothing vouchers and transportation today and tomorrow for evacuees in the Brainerd shelter to go to its East Ridge Family Story for necessary clothing items.

The Salvation Army is asking local resident who wish to help to send monetary donations to The Salvation Army, 822 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37403, or donations can be made online at www.CSArmy.org. For those who wish to donate sports drinks or water, these can be dropped off at The Salvation Army Community Center on North Moore Road. For more information including the need for volunteers, call 423-756-1023.
