'Unity in the Community's' Thanksgiving Celebration Still Needs Help

Chattanooga, TN – Chattanooga's Third 'Unity in the Community' traditional Thanksgiving meal for the city's homeless will be held Thanksgiving Day, November 26, in the First Tennessee Pavilion at 1826 Carter Street, across from Finley Stadium. The meal will be served from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Residents of the community are still being asked to help as gift cards, monetary donations and some extra items are needed to ensure there is enough to serve all who attend.

The community is being asked to donate Wal-Mart gift cards or make cash donations to purchase other necessary items for the event. The gift cards and monetary donations should be brought to The Salvation Army at 822 McCallie Avenue, at the corner of McCallie and Magnolia. Donations need to be received by the end of business day on Tuesday, November 24.

Shuttles are being provided by local churches to pick-up homeless persons at five locations from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Thanksgiving Day. The free shuttles will pick up every fifteen minutes. The shuttle locations are: The Salvation Army at 800 McCallie Avenue; The Salvation Army in East Lake at 28th Street and 4th Avenue; The Community Kitchen on 11th Street; Miller Park in downtown Chattanooga, and from La Paz de Dios in the St. Andrews Building on Union Avenue in Highland Park.

Unity in the Community is a coalition of social service agencies, churches, businesses and the City of Chattanooga who partner to offer "turkey and all the trimmings" to the homeless and disadvantaged each year. Last year, 1,700 meals were served.
