The Salvation Army Responds to Southern Floods
Chattanooga, TN – The Salvation Army Kentucky / Tennessee Division has deployed disaster response teams to cities affected by weekend floods. Mobile kitchens are providing free food and drink, clean-up kits and emotional and spiritual support to residents of Memphis, Nashville and Jackson, Tennessee as well as inhabitants of South-Central Kentucky.
Nashville was hit particularly hard by the storms, experiencing the worst rainfall and flood disaster in the regional’s history. The Nashville Salvation Army’s own Adult Rehabilitation Center fell victim to the rising waters. Eighty men currently in treatment for substance abuse and other personal problems were relocated to a Salvation Army shelter until the water recedes. Despite personal losses resulting from the waters, local volunteers have rallied behind Salvation Army staff in service of neighbors in need. Additional response teams have been placed on stand-by as the situation develops.
Currently, monetary donations are the most effective way to lend support to the recovery effort. A $100 donation will feed a family of four for two days, provide two cases of drinking water and one household cleanup kit containing a broom, mop, bucket and other cleaning supplies.
