FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Salvation Army of Chattanooga’s 614 Corps’ Recreate Café Offers "Artist in the Church" Seminar Series Over Three Saturdays in July
Chattanooga, TN, June 27, 2011 – The Chattanooga Salvation Army’s 614 Corps’ ReCreate Café will host The Artist in the Church: Observations for Christian Artists and the Churches That Love Them, a free seminar series on July 16, 23 and 30 at 11:00 PM – 1:00 PM each Saturday. Christian artists, church leaders or anyone interested in how art leads us to truth should attend this Seminar at the ReCreate Café inside the Salvation Army 614 Corps at 800 McCallie Ave. Discussion will be encouraged.
Steve Ray, a UTC theatre professor and staff member at Chattanooga Church, will lead the seminar. Ray says, "I hope this seminar will be a way for local churches to learn more about how to welcome artists into their communities. It’s also a chance for local artists to learn a bit more about church attitudes, structure and purposes. The ReCreate Cafe is a perfect place for this event. I’m so glad the Salvation Army has opened its doors to us."
There will be two topics offered on each seminar date:
Saturday, July 16 – The Gospel Truth: Why the Artist is often at odds with the American Church’s preference for sentimentality over Truth. Curiosity vs. Fear: Sometimes seeking is not safe.
Saturday, July 23 – Performing as a Gift: Why fear of performance often encourages false humility, which is simply pride disguised. A Hearth for Outsiders: Following Jesus’ lead in welcoming outsiders.
Saturday, July 30 – Profanity, Nudity and Piety: Where should lines be drawn? The Artist as Prophet: How the church can empower the "prophet" of the post-modern world.
Steve Ray is the former National Drama Director for Wycliffe Bible Translators Australia. He has worked professionally in New York, L. A. and Australia as a theatre director, playwright, actor and musician. His play "Catching Heaven’s Horse" (co-written with Nikki Hevesey) toured large churches in L. A. and Orange County, California and was endorsed by Evangelist Billy Graham.
This Seminar is FREE but registration is encouraged. To register, call 423-756-1023 or email recreatecafe614@gmail.com.
