Helping Those in Need
The Salvation Army of Chattanooga, TN began its life-changing ministries in 1893 with this pledge from Adjutant J. C. Smith: "We (come) with peace, charity and goodwill toward everyone, and we trust we shall succeed in doing good." More than 120 years later, the Chattanooga Salvation Army's promise to our community is still doing the most good for people in need.
Today, we offer social services to meet emergency and disaster-related needs, spiritual outreach for all ages, character-building youth programs, and holiday assistance to provide necessities and bring joy to many children, seniors and families in Hamilton, Bradley, Marion, Catoosa, Dade and Walker counties. Here are some of our key programs:
The Social Services Ministry empowers individuals & families to gain self-sufficiency. We provide utility assistance, food boxes & vouchers, clothing and household items. Our F.E.A.S.T. Program is helping keep families with young children safe and secure in their own homes.
The 614 Corps' Men's Program provides transitional lodging, life skills and job search for up to six homeless men at a time in the Men's Life Development Program. These men receive personal guidance in completing their education, finding jobs and moving into permanent homes.
The ReCreate Café welcomes the homeless to a Day Center out of the weather and away from social predators. It's a safe place with coffee, snacks and personal care kits; also available are hot showers, personal lockers & mailboxes, seasonal clothing, a computer lab and counseling.
Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services feed, hydrate & counsel disaster victims and relief workers in time of local and area emergencies whether natural or man-caused. We provide food & beverages, as well as, trained emotional & spiritual care. Volunteers are always welcome to take Salvation Army training classes and then serve on the frontlines.
Salvation Army Holiday Assistance Programs share all the joy of a Christ-filled Thanksgiving & Christmas. Our "army of volunteers" join us in special programs such as The Angel Tree and The Red Kettle Campaign. You can assist in a variety of ways in programs that provide food, clothing, personal care items, and, yes, new toys for thousands of children! We also serve and deliver hundreds of Thanksgiving and Christmas meals.
Our Family Thrift Store distributes clothing and other household items to those in need during times of emergency. We also offer gently-used donated items to the public at affordable prices. Check out clothing, shoes, furniture, household items, electronics, sports equipment, and books for you and your family at our Family Store.
The Salvation Army Corps Community Centers present Christian education, fellowship, worship and service to all ages and races. Salvation Army youth specialties include sports, music & art instruction, Lexia Learning reader education, computer classes and terrific summer camp experiences at home and away.
